October Meeting Minutes

Open Studio weekend—decent turnout, many first-time visitors, positive feedback about exhibit

Kimball Gallery—weaving will be on display through next week, then Creative Collective can display again

Open Studio weekend, October 6 & 7, 10 AM to 5 PM— Ken has 3 artists who will be bringing new work

Weaver’s Guild meeting same weekend as Open Studio, so need to move artwork out of Kimball Room Gallery space

*Meet to move artwork this Friday 9/21 late morning

*Send reminder to all artists in Artists’ Market to swap out work prior to Open Studio; encourage participation; 2012 dues; artists studios for rent at WRCC

*Publicity for Collective & Figure Drawing—Seven Days

*Work with SPA, Burlington City Arts, other arts organizations to promote our programs—who will establish contacts?

Art in the Park idea—town will support with permission from the Selectboard, insurance rider for event only; possible to hold it at Branchwood property or in town hall parking lot

Here is an appetizer-sized taste of Barry's delicious last performance at the Craft Center (short due to the size of the memory card, not by design).  The performance involved music-making with traditional and more unusual instruments, an homage to sculptor Elizabeth Catlett, the inspiration of Kandinsky's poetry, and, of course, audience participation.  Anyone wanting more can contact the Collective for contact info or updates on "BVM"...

This was the last Collective meeting for Barry, who will be moving out of the state soon.  He shared with us his inimitable blend of music, poetry, and visual art.  Without a doubt, no one can fill his shoes, and we wish him all the best in his new adventures!

Discussion of “abstract” vs. “non-/representational” or “non/objective” art that evolved into design vs. fine art vs. craft…

Then sharing our own processes and approach to art, inspiring artists (Chuck Close, Gee’s Bend quilters)

Open Studio weekend:  will be advertised at VT Welcome Center & include ceramics and woodworking from Weston Street studios

"Swimming Retriever" Screening, March 2012

Collective member Holly Sanders showed her new documentary video about Jim Sardonis's "Swimming Retriever" sculpture at the White River Craft Center on March 30, followed by Q&A with both the filmmaker and the artist.  The Kimball Gallery is a great space for a screening (see the space below) and a wonderful time was had by all!  Keep your eyes open for another opportunity to see this fascinating explanation of how a local artist's vision transforms a giant block of marble into a larger-than-life (yet amazingly lifelike) dog's head.

Update from Holly—working on Cuba & Sardonis videos, plans to show in the near future:  Cuban video will be shown Friday March 16 at Jewish Community Center in Woodstock

Wide-ranging discussion starting with Holly’s experiences traveling in Cuba to document the Jewish community there in video

Visual identity of White River Craft Center, Artists Market space

Barry brought Man Ray photo “Image of Man” for discussion

Question for all:  How can we improve the Artists Market??

Cultural Facilities Grant?  Ask Kevin if WRCC has applied

 Alexis invites artists to her studio for conversation about beauty, community and healing

 Tammy announces studio sale at her Northfield studio—clearance work $5 & up, 20% off new work 

Getting the word out—both to artists and audience

 Next show?
• With greater organization and delegation of responsibility, putting on a show could be much easier
• **Possible Hi-Lo exhibit at WRCC, dates TBA, class/workshop in conjunction Artists’ Market—unified label; expand to Kimball Gallery?
